About the book
There is a pressing need to integrate the blue, green and grey; to merge water, greenery and built elements in new ways that create robust socio-ecological systems. Asia is witnessing a staggering loss of human, social and natural capitals, partly due to the way we build. The problem isn't that we aren't Green enough; it's that Green may be the right answer to the wrong question. Should we stay the course and do less harm? Or is there a need now, faced with a pressing global crisis of ecology and climate, to do good; to heal, repair, and regenerate? Ecopuncture: Transforming Architecture and Urbanism in Asia returns to the heart of the sustainability question: how to forge Human-Nature partnerships, and restore our place in the natural world. What's good for the planet, it turns out, is beautiful and profitable in more ways than we had imagined.
“Nirmal Kishnani has created an extraordinary manifesto for the transformation of human settlements and the pulsing, generous, living world that we call nature. With sensitivity, brilliance, and knowledge of current realities, Ecopuncture proposes and demonstrates the possibilities inherent in a systemic approach to our buildings and cities, integrating the needs of humanity and nature into tapestries of innovative design. A critically important book that comes at a crucial turning point in the life of the planet.”
——Paul Hawken, Author of Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming
The book, Ecopuncture: Transforming Architecture and Urbanism in Asia, focuses on projects and cities in Asia that seek human-nature symbiosis. The video, as a companion piece to the book, focuses on Asian thought-leaders. It features interviews with noteworthy practitioners such as Dr Kongjian Yu (Turenscape, China), Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell (Woha, Singapore), who share their vision of what the design profession and Asia needs at this moment in time.

WOHA Architects is a leading design practice based in Singapore that - by innovating form - brings together human-made and natural systems in new ways. Wong Mun Summ, the firm's co-founding director, describes Kampung Admiralty as "club sandwich architecture," alluding to stacked layers that optimise land-use and forge a synergy of parts. Here, social and ecological ambitions align. The ground is a public space that serves the neighbourhood at large; the middle is a medical centre; the top juxtaposes homes for the elderly with a childcare centre and community farm. The roof is also a pocket park that attracts birds and insects. A 2018 biodiversity audit found that it has more species than nearby patches of green.

Shanghai Houtan Park was developed as part of the 2010 World Expo. Today, the park continues to be used as an amenity by the people of Shanghai. Landscape architect and urban strategist Yu Kongjian chose to demonstrate 'deep form', a term he uses to describe the integration of cultural and natural layers. The park would also be an example of constructed nature, merging water management techniques with habitat creation, and overlaid with social spaces. Its form centres around a waterway-cum-wetland, made up of a linear arrangement of treatment ponds. At one end, water is drawn from the river; at the other, it is discharged in a significantly cleaner state. The plants and clean water have already attracted a diversity of fauna, including 70 species of aquatic invertebrates, 73 species of aquatic animals, 20 species of birds, 29 species of insects, etc.

The Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore is predicated on the idea of a healing environment, which links the well-being of its occupants to the physical attributes of the building. What differentiates this from others is its generosity and openness. The water systems connects to wider hydrological systems in the catchment. The green spaces inside the court attracts birds from nearby nature reserves. The public spaces of the hospital are a social hub for the neighbourhood. Since it opened in 2010, the hospital has altered the urban and natural ecosystems around it. There are new pathways for pedestrians, new biophilic spaces for relaxation, new lines of movement for birds and butterflies.
